omen of Excellence, NWAS, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1998 at the Youngstown Club, 202 Commerce Street, Youngstown, Ohio. Carolyn Bell Murphy, the founder, shared her vision with Marty Bushy, Esq., Leonora Solomon, Barbara Pennington, Jessie Peterson, Janice Baldwin, Marie Danes, Lynnette Sutton, and Mildred McElroy.  They were responsive and began making plans for the first project which was a weekend retreat at the Holiday Inn on Belmont Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio. Guest came from near and far to attend the beginning of a group designed to meet a need that so many women are confronted with -- Domestic  Abuse.

The organization is comprised of women from all walks of life beginning with middle school girls. Within the differences you will find different cultures, different denominations and different educational backgrounds that have come together as one to enhance the total woman. Our goal is to enhance the total woman spiritually, educationally, economically, and socially..This enhancement is done through workshops, retreats, mentoring, referrals, one -on -one and scholarships to selected colleges.
Another major function of the organization is to educate all women, beginning with Middle School girls about abuse before a relationship enters the danger zone.

UNIQUE…

We are not just another social or abuse organization. Some of the women who show up at our functions will never show up at a shelter, a regular support group or even bother to call the domestic hot line.

We want women to know what danger signs to watch out for and to encourage independence and to know when it is necessary before it is too late. It is not the organization's desire to separate couples but to empower women to make the best decisions for them. It is also not a desire to replace any organization but to offer an alternative with a different approach.

There is no finger pointing. Women are helped in the order listed above: spiritually, educationally, economically and socially. We do not cause people to distrust us by sharing their information. If they come to a point where they want to share it, they do it and we have had several to do so over our years of functioning as an organization. Some dynamic testimonies have come about as a result of our assistance.
